THE IMPORTANCE OF DAILY RITUALS IN YOUR LIFE

One of the most common needs for a human being is to have a feeling of certainty.  To feel a sense of comfort, stability, security or familiarity in your life.  This leads to a sense of feeling centered and grounded, because there are different things that you do, different places where you go emotionally, that take you to that place.

A simple solution is to create rituals, actions that you do on a regular basis that bring your mind back to a place that is familiar and brings you comfort.  You remember the old saying in The Wizard of Oz:  There’s no place like home.  This is about regaining your balance and foundation.

I like to start the day by taking a brisk walk around my neighborhood.  Then I make a nutritious smoothie to feed my body and mind, so that I am resourceful and energized when I connect with my team and brainstorm ways to contribute to others.  Soothing lavender baths are also a regular ritual for me as I release any stress and anxiety and take time for myself, so I am in a great space to be with my family and friends.

For those of you who travel a great deal, it is especially important to find ways to take you away from the varying shifts of environment and energy that is so characteristic of being in airports, being on planes, traveling in a car, trains, rapid transit, boats, ferries, whatever your choice of transportation.  You are often faced with the unknown, which can throw you off of your game and that grounded place.

That’s when it’s important to anticipate these moments so that you are prepared to go to a comforting place in your mind by bringing certain rituals with you.  When you check into your hotel room, what will you have in your luggage that will bring you back to center?

  • It could be a special tea that you enjoy.
  • It could be a scented candle that evokes certain emotions of love.
  • How about your favorite bath bomb?
  • Did you pack the framed photo of your family that you can put at your bedside?
  • Is there a certain guided meditation you can access on your device?

Here some examples of celebrity morning rituals from Inc.: https://www.inc.com/bryan-adams/6-celebrity-morning-rituals-to-help-you-kick-ass.html.

  1. Tony Robbins uses a ritual called Priming, performing three sets of 30 Kapalbhati Pranayama breaths.
  1. Tim Ferriss makes his bed first thing.  He says that it fills him with a small sense of pride and he accomplishes something right away.  He follows this with meditation for 10-20 minutes.
  1. Oprah Winfrey starts her morning with 20 minutes of meditation, then hits the treadmill.
  1. Former President Barack Obama would start his day in the White House two hours before his first scheduled event.  “This allowed him to prioritize exercise, an activity he never missed.”
  1. The late, great Steve Jobs’ morning routine was incredibly profound yet simple.  He would get up, make his bed, shower, then look at himself in the mirror and ask himself:If today was the last day of my life, would I be happy with what I’m about to do today?”  He knew something had to change if the answer was “No” too many days in a row.

What rituals do you do to kickstart your day or bring you back to a balanced life so you feel grounded, vital, loving, perceptive, expressive and spiritually grounded?  Being balanced in life is not an easy feat, but with conscious and deliberate thought and actions, the daily rituals that bring you there will become routine and cherished moments of your life.  Think of it as a spiritual sport and embrace the process.
