FRESH START! Listen to Your Gut, Get What YOU Want … NOW!

When you think of successful people like Oprah, Adele and Steve Jobs—do you ever wonder how they did it? How they became so groundbreaking and legendary?

It’s not because they copied other people.

It’s not because they did what other people told them to do.

And it’s not because they were lucky.

They all rose to the top because they followed their gut.

Think about it. No one did what Oprah did on TV. She went off the air seven years ago, but she’s still irreplaceable. And she credits her intuition with guiding her throughout her career:

“For all the major moves in my life—to Baltimore, to Chicago, to own my show, and to end it—I’ve trusted my instincts,” Oprah has said. “I take in all the information I can gather. I listen to proposals, ideas, and advice. Then I go with my gut, what my heart feels most strongly.”

Adele soared to the top of the charts and won a Grammy with a song that came straight from her heart after a painful breakup, not because she tried to be like someone else. She didn’t try to make “Someone Like You” appeal to the mainstream—she made it as personal as possible. But because it was raw and real, it resonated with the public.

Adele has even said that her test for knowing if a song is good is if it makes her tear up. “In order for me to feel confident with one of my songs it has to really move me,” she explained. “That’s how I know that I’ve written a good song for myself – it’s when I start crying.”

And as for Steve Jobs, could anyone else have come up with the iPod? That was his unique vision and execution. “Intuition is a very powerful thing, more powerful than intellect, in my opinion,” Jobs once said. “That’s had a big impact on my work.”

So here’s your reality check: Are you listening to your gut? Are you following your own playbook, or are you trying to follow someone else’s?

Maybe you’ve been following a playbook that was written by your parents or someone else close to you. Maybe you were expected to grow up to be something specific, and you were never given the freedom to really go after what you want.

That was me at one point in my life. I got caught up in doing what I thought I “should” do or what was expected of me, or what everyone else was doing.

But you know what? Nothing felt quite right until I tuned back in to my own inner voice, my intuition, my guiding light. Since then, I’ve used my intuition to carve my own path, whether it was deciding to become a mom, writing a book or starting Lobella.

So ask yourself right now: What is your intuition telling YOU? It’s okay if you’re embarrassed by the answer. You don’t have to share your dream with anyone but yourself. 🙂

It’s okay to say that you want to make $1 million a year or solve the water crisis or become the best director, best author, best anything of our time! This is YOUR dream! Don’t let anyone take it away from you!

Maybe what you really want is to stay home and raise a family and become the best PTA President ever.

Maybe your intuition is telling you to slow down, take some time off, spend time with your parents or travel.

Maybe it’s simply telling you to go to that party you were invited to this weekend, even though you’re kind of tired—because you might meet someone there who will change everything.

Whatever your gut is telling you to do, do yourself a big favor and DO IT! (Today, preferably! 😉 )

You can change directions and get a fresh start at any time in your life. So why not NOW?

You don’t have to know all the details of how and when it will happen. That will unfold as you start taking action.

If your intuition has become so muffled that you can no longer hear it, take a moment to just BE with yourself. Take a walk, take a bath or sit in your most comfortable chair and quiet your mind.

Then ask yourself “What do I want? Where do I want to be a year from now or five years from now?”

If you want to take it further, try the “Adele Test”: Did anything come to mind that gave you an emotional response? Did the thought of accomplishing a particular goal put a big goofy grin on your face or make you tear up? That’s your gut trying to tell you something!

If your inner voice has been drowned out for so long, it may take some time and patience to get it back.

Tell me this: When was the last time you left your house for the day—and left your phone at home?

We check our phones about 47 times per day, according to research from Deloitte, and 89 percent of people look at their phones within an hour of waking up.

It’s no wonder our intuition can’t get through!

Take some time every day to be alone (with no phone, no distractions of any kind!) and just be still and listen.

If you make that a regular part of your day, that voice will get louder and louder. And then you’ll know exactly what to do.

We all have the answers inside of us.

How cool is that?!

So, come on. Stop waiting. Do this today (No excuses!).

As Steve Jobs said,

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”
